EPC is a flow chart for business process modeling introduced by August-Wilhelm Scheer in the early 1990s. It illustrates the business process workflows. It uses graphical symbols to show the control-flow structure of a business process as a chain of events and functions. The building blocks used in EPC diagrams are: Event, Function, Operator, Organization unit, Control flow, Process path, Organization unit assignment, Information resource, System, Information flow. A major strength of EPC is claimed to be its simplicity and easy-to-understand notation.

Există trei tipuri de conectori: AND, OR și OR exclusiv (XOR).

Event Process Chain (EPC) is a modeling technique used to represent business processes, focusing on the sequence of events and functions that trigger process steps. EPC provides an intuitive view of process structures, helping organizations map, analyze, and improve their operations through a systematic approach to event-driven processes. The main components of an EPC include events, functions, connectors, and organizational units. An EPC helps in Business Process Management by providing a clear and structured visualization of processes, which aids in identifying inefficiencies, redundancies, and bottlenecks. EPCs can be used to model a wide range of business processes across various industries.

An 'Event-driven process chain' (EPC) is a modeling language you can use to describe business processes and workflows. Event-driven process chains are used to describe the operational sequence of processes. An event is defined by the conditions that must be met to start and end the process. Event-driven process chains are often used at the lowest level of the process hierarchy. Event-driven process chains are used in many industries and are supported by different tools. EPCs were invented back in 1992 by Prof. Scheer and colleagues at the University of Saarland.

The Event-driven Process Chain (EPC) is a modeling notation to describe business processes. It integrates all relevant business perspectives and is embedded in the overall process landscape. The EPC core elements allow you to model the procedural sequence of functions within the scope of individual business processes. The extended EPC elements allow you to detail the pure procedural description of your business process by integrating data, risks, resources, organizational elements, etc. EPCs are used to detail the functional areas of an organization at a procedural level.
